THE WEIGH-DOWN WORKSHOP

I got an e-mail the other night from a friend, and I debated bringing the topic here... I didn't want her to think I'd just take her concerns and splatter them across Xanga... but it's something that bothered me, and that's what I have this thing for - to talk about things that bother me ((and then some!!))  So without divulging information that might hurt her, I'm gonna talk about this topic.  Because if it was eye-opening to me, it's bound to be eye-opening to you.

The girl who contacted me was involved with a "Christian weight loss" program called the Weigh Down Workshop.  I'd heard of it, but I didn't know anything about it.  She said that she was concerned, because she'd read that the founder denounced the Trinity and there was a big scandal surrounding her program.  The questions put to me were:  What is your general feeling about the Trinity?  What is your Biblical knowledge of the Trinity?   Is it possible to take some pieces of a ministry and leave the rest without getting wrapped up in false doctrine?

Well you know me... I dove in headfirst.  And this is what I found out about the Weigh Down Workshop(WDW):

Gwen Shamblin developed this program.  It became a huge seller, with workshops all over the world.  Then colleges had issues with the program, because the students are just kids - their bodies aren't handling it well because they are still transitioning into adults.  Several campuses prohibited the program, stating that it's not good, because it doesn't teach self-control, it teaches "eat what you want, do what you want"... and that's not what the Bible says.  ((Scripture advocates self-control and moderation)).  Christian Nutritionalists came forward to state that in WDW, exercise is put on the back burner, caring about the vitamins/minerals our bodies need is downplayed, and it's potentially dangerous.  Other Christian programs are compared and , as one source puts it, "Gwen Shamblin is saying.... Eat your chocolate, eat your ice cream. The people in her testimonials may be losing weight, but is it healthy? Is it proper? Is it disciplined? I don't think so."   Gwen seethes.

Then she comes out with this letter to her devotees in 2000.  In it she says: "...I have led people to bow down to no other than the One True God of the Universe through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior....There is no reference in the Bible to the word "Trinity"... I believe that Jesus and God are two separate beings.... I believe that the God of Jesus is God the Father. Jesus is not God the Father...

Which triggers an article published in the Wall Street Journal stating that since the publication of her letter thousands of churches have dropped her Weigh Down program. She has also invited people to her Remnant Fellowship church, a church started by herself and her husband. ((How suspicious is that?!?))  The Wall Street Journal reports that "four former employees filed a religious-discrimination lawsuit against her company, alleging that they were fired for refusing to embrace Mrs. Shamblin's theological views and to attend her church."   Also, to their credit, Thomas Nelson Publishers cancelled her book contract with them because of her denial of the Trinity.

And then, as if that isn't enough, she begins a "Remnant" crusade, trying to get people to leave their churches (she calls them Babylon) and join hers (which she calls Jerusalem).  Her church believes that Jesus is not God, therefore our sins are paid for by someone less than God ((heresy!!)) and that we are called to work our way to heaven, even unto keeping ourselves "thin" to please God.

Next she sends out an e-mail (December 2000) telling her followers that God has chosen her to lead His true followers into sinless perfection and that anyone who follows her must separate from all others calling themselves Christians.  ((How whacked is that?!?)) And she dismisses all churches and religious organizations that don't agree with her as "cults" and "cult leaders".

So what are we seeing here?  We're seeing a woman who has first started a "Christian health movement" (that has little to do with health at all)... then slowly begins to deviate from Biblical truth... then moves away from the church... then creates her own church... then coaxes people away from the Bible-based community... then begins a slow attack on the true church, proclaiming herself a ((self-appointed)) prophet and declaring anyone who doesn't agree with her way a "cult leader".

A true cult (as accepted by the church) is any religion that does not adhere to core Biblical principles.  Including the concept of a three-in-one Godhead, an immaculate conception of the sinless Lamb who takes away our sins, on a cross by grace and thru faith alone.  The principles behind WDW state that there is no three-in-one Godhead, that although Christ died on the cross for our sins, we have to do works to be saved, and that includes keeping pounds off in an act of devotion to God, or we're sinners bound for judgment.  It's WRONG... and this is cult-behavior to a tee.  Moving slowly into the fold, luring sheep away from the truth.

So can we take the good from something like this and leave the bad?  I look at it like this... if you see a fruit, and it smells good and looks good but when you cut it open, you see it has worms in it... why would you want to eat it?  It's still bad.  And if you 'go there', you're probably still gonna get a bite of a worm, even if you're careful. And honestly - what would God say if you saw something that denied His truth, and moved towards it - even just a step - knowing full-well what it is?

Here are some alternatives if anyone wants a "Christian" program.  I haven't researched them, but it's just to let you know that they're out there, available:
3D
First Place
The Halleluiah Diet

Message board for WDW alternatives

... And what about the Trinity...?
... Is there such a thing?  What does the Bible say...?
        ... to be continued...

She is up to no good!  I am interested what you will say about Trinity.  It is true that the word is not in the Bible.

Excellent expose!! I read that book about two years ago and many, many red flags went up!

Of the three programs you mentioned at the end, the one I would be careful of is the Halleluiah diet. I believe it has some wonderful health benefits, especially for extreme cases, i.e. folks with cancer, but the doctrine is questionable.  I've led 3D and First Place meetings and the diet is very balanced and healthful.  The Bible studies aren't demanding and are also fairly balanced.

I had heard of WDW, but I didn't know a whole lot about it.  I'm glad now I didn't join the group that formed at the church I used to attend!

BTW - the new addition to the background is lovely, and it's not too flowery at all.  Very dignified and feminine.  I like it!

You know, sometimes you just have to scratch your head, look at people like Mrs. Shamblin, and wonder at what point these folks decided to jump overboard.  Bizarre... absolutely bizarre.  I'd heard of the WDW back in it's early stages... but I'd not heard about the evolution to cult status... pretty scary stuff.

1 John 4 1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

I never bought into her "line" anyhow.  I'm very wary of fads that go thru the church.

Hey Anna - I didn't Find any Veggies under the boys bed yesterday - just a couple of dried wrinkled carrots and an apple core.  Their Bob, Larry, and Junior have a place o honor next to heir pillows so they rarely get lost.

I have read Ms. Shamblin's first book.  And I have her audio tapes.  My Mother went through the WDW at her church and passed tha materials on to me.

I agree that there is a lot of flaky theology involved.  But from the materials I have, it's very difficult to discern any of the heretical views that she may have.  I have to defend her program a little bit.

It is true that she "allows" people to have chocolate and potato chips and she doesn't prescribe a specific food regimen with all the nutrient bases covered.  But, she preaches moderation in all things.  Her advice about exercise isn't that you don't do it, but that you shouldn't think you can use exercise as a way to eat excessive amounts of food without gaining weight.  She is a nutritionist, not an exercise physiologist so she doesn't hand out advice on specific exercises.

While I certainly think we need to be discerning of the spirits of our teachers, I've noticed in the larger Church a tendency to tar people with a heretical brush at the drop of a hat.  I don't know Ms. Shamblin, and she may be everything that the reports say.  But, I don't know.

I'm suspicious of the ellipses in the report of the letter that she sent out.  (I don't assume that you put in the ellipses, I've seen this same report elsewhere on the internet.)  I also know that people who have a very Orthodox view of the Trinity have and do make very similiar statements to the ones that she made.  The Trinitarian doctrine isn't easy to define, describe, or explain, that's why many theologians refer to it as  a "mystery".  I'll prefer to withhold judgment on anyone who stumbles while trying to discuss the Trinity, because I'm not sure that I could do any better.

Wow. I didn't know that about WDW. I'd heard of it and even had a family member go through the program, but sounds like it started out fairly innocent and then this lady went off the deep end. Thank you for all the research and enlightenment.

Love your blog and I admire that you have the courage to tell so many truths publicly. I read some of her writings and was put off by it. Now I'm glad I didn't buy into it. Keep up the good work.

I just came across this and don't know if this is current, but have just discovered you. I was in WD, WDA, then Strongholds as they came out years ago. I thought only the original WD was the super program. Hard hitting, with only a few things I needed to overlook. Then, in recent weeks I went to look into it again & am reeling from what I've discovered!! Only members of her NEW denomination are saved???? She's THE ONLY ONE with the direct line to God??? What happened to Gwen??? I feel "taken". I beleived her to be so sincere, but she has to be completely deceived (or worse) to be pounding her fists with each statements. I also hesitate to bring up something that might be considered tacky, but here goes: In her early programs, she was very careful to have a modest appearance. Now, good grief! The gaudy make-up, wild hair, off the shoulder garments. This to me is another indication that she's gone heavy down the path of promoting "self". Sorry if this is too tacky to bring up, but has anyone else noticed this? Both on TV appearances & if you go to her remnant site where there are photos of her & her daughter in outfits that just don't fit with the persona she projected in her earlier programs. Sorry if this is offensive commentary to anyone, but she is a public figure, & I am just trying to understand what has happened to someone I had thought was sincere & trustworthy. I have now started "thin within" and love the affirming encouraging scriptures they point out to help along the way. Many other "tips" in the program are helping me to have more success that I did with WD also. Someone please write & tell me if you think you have any idea what has brought about this huge change in Gwen?

I don't know Gwen, have never seen her, but am wearing hot pink/black smocking with slit sleeves and heavy make-up... and I was accepted to a Goth Homeschooler group yesterday.  Judge not as to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.  ((John 7:24)).  My post on the Weigh-Down Workshop isn't about Gwen's choice in clothing, hairdo, or make-up... rather her beliefs and how they (don't) correlate to scripture.  That in itself is all I need to judge, y'know?  The rest I have to let go.

I have a friend (FairyBunnyPrincess) that's doing "The Lord's Table" - she says it's very good and very scriptural.  You may like that.  And if I didn't mention it, thank you for dropping in.  I hope I haven't offended you and that you'll find a kindred spirit here.
