  • Year of the Snake

Today is the Chinese New Year.  And it’s significant this year… for several reasons.

When the Chinese-speaking world ushers in its new year on Sunday, its 12-year zodiac will turn from the dragon to one of the world’s most despised animals. As undeserved as the snake’s reputation might be, its last two years did not go so well: 2001 was the year of the Sept. 11 attacks and 1989 was when Chinese forces crushed pro-democracy protests around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Some wonder if this one also could hold bad tidings. “In Chinese mythology, snakes were often associated with monsters, or with incarnations of monsters, so some political turbulence can be expected,” said Taiwanese astrologer Tsai Shang-chi.

According to wikipedia, there is a reason for the order of the 12 animals in the 12 year cycle. The story goes that a race was held to cross a great river, and the order of the animals in the cycle was based upon their order in finishing the race. In this story, the snake compensated for not being the best swimmer by hitching a hidden ride on the horses hoof, and when the horse was just about to cross the finish line, jumping out, scaring the horse, and thus edging it out for sixth place.  The snake is the SIXTH animal in the Chinese animal.  Six being the number of sin/fallen state, Satan, and wrath.

Considering where we are, I think we might see some very interesting things, this year.  And maybe there’s something to the order.  After all, Yehovah can use all things… even the animals on a Chinese placemat.

  • I was raised around Chinese families and they were very nice—also gave their kids great educations and were excellent business people.
