  • Place Values

Nine hundred, eighty one thousand, six hundred and eighty four.

That’s one BIG number.  My kids ran into some really BIG numbers this week, and when they tried to read them?  Well, let’s just say it was amusing.  And I realized that we needed to do a unit on place value.  Oh, not telling them this is in the ‘tens’ place, and this in the ‘hundred thousands’ place… that’s already been covered in our math books.  But READING the number is interesting, because if the number is this:

    981,684

It is not read ‘nine hundred thousand, eight ten thousand, one thousand, six hundred eight tens and four ones’.  Which is what is taught in just about every chart I have seen on place values, and believe you me, I’ve seen a LOT of them.  ‘Cuz I did a search engine look-up on them.  And there is one HECK of a lot of charts out there.  Not a one of them looks like my chart.

    And yes… I’ve made a chart.

My chart is for teaching how to SAY numbers.  It’s a place value chart, but it’s not your average bear… because its focus is not on what place the number is, but what it’s read as.  That means you have to teach places off the OTHER five hundred thousand charts out there, and learn to read off mine.  But it’s a fun little thing, and I thought I’d share it, here.  If you’d like a printable version:
